LETTER SENT TO COUNCIL – RE: LACK OF FESTIVALS AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES IN GREENVALE
Letter expressed concern and dismay that Festivals and Community based activities are never held in Greenvale but yet in other areas of Hume, there is plenty of entertainment for rate-payers.We reminded Council that we pay exorbitant amounts in rates and we would like them to work with us to develop a community based festival that would celebrate all the things that are good in our Greenvale Community.

LETTER RECEIVED FROM VIC ROADS – RE: BARRYMORE RD TO SOMERTON RD, GREENVALE SHARED USER PATH

Council undertook a traffic investigation to monitor the turning movements of large vehicles at the roundabout of Greenvale Drve and Kirkham Drve. The observation found that buses are mounting the nature strip when turning right from Kirkham Drve into Greenvale Drve. The Department of Transport is the responsible authority for all public transport movements including buses. The investigation results, photos and a copy of our letter will be forwarded to the Department of Transport. Council will contact the Department of Transport for the upgrade of the roundabout.
LETTER RECEIVED FROM LIZ BEATTIE – RE: CRISIS ACCOMODATION IN GREENVALE & ROAD LIGTING ON MICKLEHAM RD
Liz Beattie received correspondence from the Planning Minister – Justin Madden regarding our concerns with the Lighthouse Foundation Crisis Accomodation. The Minister points out that the Victorian Government is committed to increasing low cost and affordable housing and in order to support such housing provision, there has been a long standing government policy exempting dwellings with up to 10 habitable rooms, located in a residential zone, from the need for a planning permit. This policy has been maintained by successive Victorian State Governments since 1989. The intent of this permit exemption is to ensure that crisis accommodation is not duly affected by prejudice and discrimination. He notes that most Councils have developed Housing Strategies to address issues such as what we are raising and he recommends we continue our dialogue with Hume Council as the appropriate mechanism to resolve our concerns.
Liz Beattie also passed on correspondence from the Minister for Roads – Tim Pallas. He advises us that Vic Roads only provide street lighting at major intersections and pedestrian crossings. Vic Roads does not provide lighting between intersections unless there is a demonstrated night time road safety issue, as research has shown that there are few road safety benefits in providing such lighting. Vic Roads would not agree to a cost-share arrangement with Hume Council for the installation and maintenance of additional lighting along Mickleham Rd as they feel there are no road safety issues which could be addressed by such a treatment.

CORPUS CHRISTI - GREENVALE
Patrick Gallagher, the CEO of Corpus Christi, addressed the GRA meeting after residents’ raised concerns about the behaviour of the gentlemen outside the Corpus Christi Centre.
·Corpus Christi was established over 20 years ago by Mother Teresa as a refuge for homeless men.
·There are currently 86 men housed there.
·Most of the men are well behaved and don’t pose any problems, but unfortunately there are a few that residents complain about.
·Corpus Christi was not established as a rehabilitation centre but more as a nursing home for these men.
·The staff encourages the men to get involved in various programs that are run at the centre and most are actively involved in the kitchen, manning the phones etc.
·A resident at the meeting articulated that she was concerned that men are seen drinking outside the Corpus Christi premises and around tennis courts. She also expressed concern that these men are vulnerable and could be could be hurt when walking around neighbourhood, if they have been drinking.
· Patrick wants to be contacted if residents see men behaving inappropriately. He can be contacted on 9333 1444.
GENERAL BUSINESS
Charlie and David attended a Growth Areas Development meeting which outlined plans for future growth in Greenvale. There are plans for a future Activity Centre, north of Somerton Rd. There are plans for high density housing in the area. The plan is to house 15 houses per hectare.
There are plans for a new primary school, and a Government authority has stated that there are no plans to sell the site on Barrymore Rd. It appears that the Government may be aknowledging that in the future, there may be a need for a school on the site of Barrymore Rd.
Charlie suggested that we support locals organizing the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea.
