CORRESPONDENCE OUT / IN
LETTER RECEIVEDFROM HUME COUNCIL – CRAIG MEDCALF (Manager Parks & Open Spaces) -RE: SHANNON RISE, GREENVALE
This is a response to a letter written in June regarding the unattractive condition of the area along Yuroke Creek in Shannon Rise. Council informs us that this area is a Melbourne Water Pipe Track and as such, the maintenance of this land, together with land adjacent to the rear of the Greenvale Recreation Centre, is the responsibility of Melbourne Water. Council assure us that they will speak to Melb Water to clarify maintenance responsibilities and ensure that maintenance programs are implemented.
LETTER RECEIVEDFROM HUME COUNCIL – PAUL RILEY (Asset Protection & Environment Officer) -RE: CLOSURE OF ACCESS AREA TO MOTORBIKES ON CATTERICK CRT & BRIDLINGTON DRVE
We wrote a letter back in April and re-sent letter again in July to Council about 4 WD’S and motorbikes using Somerton Rd to access private land near Catterick Drve and Bridlington Place, causing a dangerous and hazardous traffic situation. Council advises that building works will commence at the area of concern in Catterick Drve and bollards will be installed on either end of the walkway, thus blocking vehicular access to the area off Catterick Drive. The land at the end of Bridlington Place is deemed private property and as such, the matter has been referred to the landowner. Council advises that it has obtained two off-road motorcycles for the exclusive use by Victoria Police within the Hume municipality. Residents are advised to report any instances of illegal motor vehicle use to the Fawkner Traffic Management. The Police contact is Daniel Zitch – 9335 6139
LETTER RECEIVEDFROM VIC ROADS -RE: RIGHT TURN LANE FROM SOMERTON RD INTO ROXBURGH PARK SHOPPING CENTRE
This is a response to letter written back in April. VicRds advise that Hume Council is developing a proposal for the expansion of the existing shopping centre, including additional car parking. The treatment involves the extension of the right turn lane into the shopping centre and modifications to the line marking on the Reservoir Drive intersection. It is expected that this treatment will better accommodate existing right turn traffic into the shopping centre. A timelime for the work has not been established, but VicRds will work with Hume Council to implement their proposal.

EMAIL SENT BY CHARLIE TO HAYLEY FROM COUNCIL -RE: SIGNS TO ADVERTISE GRA & NHW
Charlie called Council and spoke to Hayley (City Valuer) about the problems we have had with getting a sign to be placed outside the Rec Centre to advertise GRA and NHW. Charlie then sent Hayley an email asking Council to co-operate with our request.
Charlie met Jason Summers from Council, on site at walking/bike path along Mickleham Rd, to discuss the septic odour coming from open drain. He requested that we send him all correspondence from Council since 2006 regarding this problem which still hasn’t been rectified.
Relevant correspondence has now been sent to him.

APPLICATION FOR A LIQUOR LICENCE FOR GREENVALE SHOPPING CENTRE
Shelagh Jordan from Corpus Christi spoke to our group about the proposal to grant a Liquor Licence to the Greenvale Shopping Centre.
• Shelagh explained to us that Corpus Christi was established 30 years ago by the late Mother Teresa who visited Australia in 1974 after witnessing first hand the poverty and loneliness of men here in Melbourne.
• Corpus Christi operates as a care home for former homeless alcoholic men. At present there are 92 residents at the home, aged from 48 to 80 years of age, providing them with security, companionship and care.
• If a Liquor Licence were to be granted, just a couple of hundred metres from the Centre, it would defeat the purpose of having the centre there in the first place.
• Adem added that many people wouldn’t mind the extra 10 min drive to buy alcohol elsewhere and also, having a liquor store in Greenvale could cause alcohol related problems with our youth.
• In 30 years, there have been two applications for a Liquor Licence; the first application was withdrawn and the second application was defeated in 1989.
• Shelagh explained that they have a team of solicitors working on the case and the idea is to approach the Government to set a boundary around Greenvale to make it a dry area. In this way, new residents moving into Greenvale would be aware of the alcohol restrictions.
• There are no plans to relocate Corpus Chisti due to financial and practical reasons.
• Shelagh explained that legally a petition does not hold any weight.
• If Greenvale residents wish to object to Liquorland establishing a liquor store here in Greenvale, a letter must be sent to the Director of liquor Licensing stating reasons why objection is being lodged. Objections MUST be lodged by October 11th, 2009.
• As many objections as possible is desirable as this could help sway the Director of Liquor Licensing into not granting application to Liquorland.
** GREENVALE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION VOTED TO SUPPORT CORPUS CHRISTI AND LODGE A LETTER OF OBJECTION TO A LIQUOR LICENCE BEING GRANTED TO LIQUORLAND.

SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR GREENVALE
Suzan, who is spear-heading the campaign for a secondary school for Greenvale was unable to make the meeting tonight. She is currently awaiting a reply from the Education Dept and has acknowledged that the process will be a slow one.
COUNCILLORS’ REPORT- Cr Ros Spence & Cr Adem Atmaca
• Cr Ros Spence apologised for not attending previous GRA meetings due to other commitments on a Thursday night. She did emphasize that if any residents have issues to discuss, to then contact her, and she rejected any claims that she has let down Greenvale.
• Ros informed us that both she and Adem fought hard to secure six bus shelters for Greenvale which are currently being installed. Money has been made available for a new soccer oval and two tennis courts for the tennis club, as well as an upgrade for the Greenvale Recreation Centre and playgrounds.
• Ros is concerned about safety issues at the Kirkham Drive and Somerton Rd intersection and assured us that land is set aside in Shannon Rise for a future Neighbourhood House for Greenvale.
• Adem also apologised for not being present at meetings due to other commitments but has reiterated that residents can contact him if there are issues they wish to discuss.
• A resident voiced her concerns about the fragile state of the Yuroke Creek with thistles and rubbish everywhere and possible threats to frogs and other wildlife that inhabit the creek area. Ros assured her that she will investigate this problem.
• Ros told us about the Smartbus Route 902 from Chelsea to Airport West and SmartBus Route 901 which will be extended to run from Frankston to Melbourne Airport in 2011.
