August 2010 Meeting Minutes

MINUTES OF MEETING August 26th, 2010

LETTER SENT TO HUME CITY COUNCIL & -RE: PROGRAMS AT THE RECREATION CENTRE
Letter asked Council several questions:
1. Whether programs held at Recreation Centre are advertised to residents?
2. Why is Rec Centre closed during school holidays?
3. Could Council introduce other programs to engage residents eg: Cooking classes, Art/craft, Computers, Book Club etc
4. Could Council subsidise programs / lower rents so they are affordable to residents?

EMAIL RECEIVED FROM CR ROS SPENCE) -RE: SOMERTON RD / DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS
Cr. Ros Spence advised that last week she raised the issues regarding Somerton Rd. The motion called for increased advocacy to the responsible Minister regarding duplication of Somerton Rd and to address safety concerns with the intersections of Section Rd, Kirkham Drve and Magnolia Blvd

LETTER SENT TO HUME CITY COUNCIL & -RE: TRUCK BYLAWS
Letter asked council for clarification of bylaws regarding trucks parked in suburban streets.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Treasurer reported on finances To Date

GUEST SPEAKER – COLLEEN HARTLAND MLC –STATE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR WESTERN METROPOLITAN REGION
Colleen Hartland is the Greens Party member of Parliament for the Western Metropolitan Region.
There is no branch out this way but Collen is keen to connect with community groups in Greenvale.
Collen asked the group to list issues that they think is important in Greenvale. The list includes:

1. SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR GREENVALE
•Colleen can asked the Minister – Bronwyn Pike about a possible school for Greenvale.
•Colleen will send us contact numbers of other groups who are also campaigning for schools.

2.TRANSPORT
•Colleen informed us that transport issues will be a major theme for the Greens.
•The Smart Bus route has bypassed Greenvale.
•Bus timetables don’t synchronise with the trains.
•There is no direct bus route to Westfield or Airport.

3.VIC ROADS
•Mickleham Rd – lighting issue.
•Somerton Rd – some sections don’t have street lights.
•Dangerous intersections: Somerton Rd / Kirkham Drve/ Magnolia Rd

4.COUNCILLORS NOT REPRESENTING RATE PAYERS
•Councillors showing little or no interest in supporting residents and their issues and not even turning up to monthly GRA meetings.

5.HIGH RATES PAID BY GREENVALE RESIDENTS
•We pay the highest rates yet receive little or next to nothing in return for our community.

6.NO COMMUNITY HOUSE / LIBRARY
•No Community Hub where residents can attend classes, work out in gym etc.

7.PARKS
•Our parks in Greenvale are underdeveloped with little or no decent playground equipment for our children.

Colleen will come to our next meeting on September 30th and she will report on some of the above issues and in particular, she hopes to find out more information about the Smartbus.
Colleen extended an invitation to residents who may wish to visit her in Parliament. She will let us know when she is next sitting.

OFFICE BEARER POSITIONS FOR AGM
Joe announced that he will be stepping down as President of GRA after the Annual General Meeting in October.

**Residents are encouraged to consider applying for this role as well as role of Treasurer and Secretary to ensure the ongoing viability of the Association. **
