LETTER RECEIVED FROM HUME CITY COUNCIL & -RE: PROGRAMS AT THE RECREATION CENTRE
Letter we sent asked Council several questions: Here are the responses from Council
1. Whether programs held at Recreation Centre are advertised to residents?
Majority of groups that operate from centre are private businesses and therefore are responsible for their own advertising. Flyers are available from rec Centre.
2. Why is Rec Centre closed during school holidays?
Rec Centre is open during school holidays with the exception of Christmas holidays while the floors are being resurfaced. Council’s holiday program occupies the facility between 6am and 6pm Mon to Fri during term breaks and for three weeks during the Christmas break.Other user groups still run their sessions during the holidays.
3. Could Council introduce other programs to engage residents eg: Cooking classes, Art/craft, Computers, Book Club etc
Suggestion was made that we contact Councils’ Coordinator of Learning Programs – Marea Ekladious if we think there is a demand for these programs
4. Could Council subsidise programs / lower rents so they are affordable to residents?
Programs offered at Greenvale are the same prices as other locations. Council doesn’t have any control over the cost of programs offered by external private businesses. The cost of hiring the centre is in accordance with Council’s 2010/2011 budget
LETTER RECEIVED FROM HUME CITY COUNCIL -RE: TRUCK BYLAWS
The parking of a vehicle that is over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass and or 7.5 metres in length is only permitted to park on the carriageway in a built up area for one hour. Council Officers and Victoria police are authorised to issue infringement notices and the Police can also request the vehicle to be moved if it is parked in a dangerous manner. If the vehicles are parked on private property a permit is required from Council to do so. There is an application process to be undertaken by the applicant which involves seeking the permission from adjacent neighbours
PHONE CALL RECEIVED FROM STAR NEWSPAPER -RE: AN ARTICLE TO BE WRITTEN ABOUT PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN GREENVALE
Vania was interviewed by Laura Wakely from the Star Newspaper in regards to lack of public transport in Greenvale. The article details our disappointment that Greenvale was removed from the route of the new Smartbus 901 from Frankston to Melbourne Airport. It was also mentioned that bus timetables from Greenvale needed to be synchronised with train services. Cr Ros Spence was also interviewed and she said the Council will write to Minister for Public Transport Martin Pakula to ask that the Government investigate adding services to Greenvale.
EMAIL RECEIVED FROM CR ROS SPENCE -RE: MOTIONS RAISED AT COUNCIL MEETINGS
Cr Ros Spence has raised the following motions at recent Council Meetings:

SPE015 Urgent safety concerns in Somerton Road.
That Hume City Council, as a matter of extreme urgency, increase advocacy to State Minister Tim Pallas, in regard to issues concerning Somerton Road. In particular, the duplication of Somerton Road and safety concerns with the intersections of Somerton Road and Section Road, Somerton Road and Kirkham Road, and Somerton Road and Magnolia Boulevard.
As a result of this motion, these Somerton Road issues have been strongly pursued by Council and on Monday night a report was carried that includes inclusion of the Magnolia Blvd intersection as Councils number 1 priority in the VicRoads funding application process, Kirkham Drive as number 2, and Section Road as number 8.
I have attached the report for your information. You will also see that Council is negotiating with VicRoads to have the Somerton Road project to be divided into sections if the project cannot be funded all at once.
I hope we see an outcome to these issues before long and will continue to raise the issues and monitor progress.

Liz Beattie thanked Joe for inviting him to our meeting.
She stated that she wants to work together to improve things for Greenvale.
Liz was asked to comment on the following issues:
SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR GREENVALE
Liz responded with the following:
• There are no plans at this stage to sell the 7 acre parcel of land set aside for a school, on the corner of Barrymore Rd & Glencairn Drve.
• A population of 1100 students are needed for a secondary college to be built in Greenvale. This criteria hasn’t changed.
SOMERTON ROAD
•Liz acknowledged that Somerton Rd is a very dangerous road.
•She would like to see a staged duplication of Somerton Rd.
•Liz was disappointed that the Smart Bus doesn’t travel on Somerton Rd – if it had, it would have meant that Somerton Rd would have been duplicated and upgraded.
•Liz encourages us to keep advocating for the Smart Bus to travel through Greenvale as well as the upgrade of Somerton Rd.
•She has a huge concern about Kirkham Drve and the E14 and encourages us to write to the minister.
DEVELOPMENT IN GREENVALE
•Liz asked us to think carefully about whether we really want to grow as a suburb or stay as it is.
•She indicated that people have the right to oppose development.
•If there is a constant conflict in any area about development, developers will shy away from the suburb. Eg – Liquor license – 2 people wanted to open up restaurants in Greenvale but the current liquor licensing laws meant they could not serve alcohol.
•Liz encouraged us to think about what sort of growth we want in this area.
CONSERVATION ISSUES
•One member raised the issue of indigenous plants and animals disappearing as growth occurs and wanted reassurance from the Government that they will protect indigenous plants and animals.
•Liz responded that Green Wedge Legislation was introduced to protect areas from development but this has also caused difficulties.
•Liz assured us that Woodlands will never be built on – having the flight paths over this area actually helps to protect it.
In finishing, Liz Beattie encourages all residents to contact her for any concerns.
She encourages us also to continue writing letters and keeping up the pressure to keep things moving – what we do adds advocacy to what Liz can do.
MEETING CLOSED AT 8.15p.m.
