MAYOR GEOFF PORTER /CR ADEM ATMACA / CR HELEN PATSIKHEDOROU
- Hume Mayor, Geoff Porter
discussed current job losses in Hume and hoped that State and Federal
Governments would identify opportunities in Hume to promote job growth in
this area.
- The Mayor announced that
$7 million will be spent in Greenvale which includes upgrades to Barrymore
Rd Recreation Reserve.
- Cr Adem Atmaca told us
that Tullamarine and Craigieburn will get the National Broadband Network
and Greenvale will get it eventually.
- Question was asked if
Council can put pressure on State Govt to improve traffic issues. Answer
was “yes,” Council have been pushing for years for road improvements in
Hume.
- Issue of Neighbourhood
House was raised; Land has been set aside in Kirkham Drve for a Neighbourhood House. Adem suggested
that the land could be sold and the money put towards extending the
Recreation Centre to provide services for the Greenvale community.
- Issue of rates was raised;
Mayor Geoff Porter informed us that the rates are a tax on your property –
there has been a 5.2% increase. Council is collecting the Fire Levy from
residents and passes it straight on to the Government.
- There is also an EPA levy
which Council must pay- for every ton of rubbish that goes to landfill,
Council gets charged a levy. Our rates go towards payment of that levy.
- A rebate of $30 is passed onto pensioners
in Hume.
- Resident mentioned that
lots of money is spent in Broadmeadows. Cr Helen Patsikhedorou said that money is spent on major hubs in Hume, but
they are there for all residents to use.
- Resident wanted to know what Council was doing to promote development in Greenvale. We were informed that in new estates, it is the developer who promotes development. Mayor Geoff Porter mentioned that there is an Economic Development Team that focus on this area but Hume Coucil is competing with other Councils in this matter.
EVALUATION OF COMMUNITY TREE
PLANTING DAY
It was disappointing that not many people turned up to our
Community Tree Planting Day, even though it was very heavily advertised in the
3 school newsletters and a big ad taken out in The Leader newspaper. Those that did come, helped plant several plants and were treated to a sausage sizle afterwards.
