Robert Williams (Northern Community Recycling Group) Robert gave a talk on a recycling scheme he
and his family felt moved to start to overcome the turmoil, uncertainty and
failure that has resulted in the council recycling system. The group started as
a family unit and has now grown to some 60 residents. They are a not for profit
group purely interested in recycling.
Robert has found there are many recycling business in Victoria who will
take certain items for recycling provided they are properly cleaned and sorted.
Tin and Glass
are now being collected separately. He now has numerous bins in his back yard
which contain the separated items for recycling. Different classes of Plastic
(PET 2, PET 5), food grade glass, and even ‘Bic’ pens are now being recycled.
Contamination is the main barrier to successful recycling. Recycled plastics
come back as pipes, wheelie bins, and prosthetic limbs/parts etc. Robert said he
is willing to expand the scheme to Greenvale residents if they wanted to
participate. He will send us more details.
Councillors Report. – No councillor present.
Roads Subcommittee report:
The Victorian
State Parliament roads e-petition currently has only 370 signatures and the
subcommittee urges all members and residents to continue to sign and share the
link to reach a goal of 1000 signatures by November 2019 prior to tabling. The
subcommittee met with the e-petition sponsor Fiona Patten MP and discussed the
poor road infrastructure on Mickleham and Somerton Roads in Greenvale including
the following issues; increased traffic volumes, lack of connectivity to local
services, community hubs, clubs, schools and medical services and safety issues
including no footpaths, no lights, no curbs or road safety infrastructure. Also
the increased development to the north of Greenvale and proposed PSP releases
of Craigieburn West and Lindum
Vale which will
further impact residents. In July the subcommittee met with Hume City Council, Mayor Carly Moore and the communications team to discuss ways to collaborate and advocate for the duplication of the roads to the Victorian State Government. Cr Joseph Haweil raised the issue of the roads as a general business item in the council chamber (12 Aug) and invited state ministers to join him travelling to work in peak hour to experience the congestion for themselves. This was followed by an article in the Hume Leader published on the 3 September ‘Welcome to my ‘nightmare’ where the subcommittee was interviewed for the article.
A second article was written by Northern Star Weekly’s Laura Michel published on 1 August “Fight continues for duplication of Mickleham and Somerton Roads” to highlight the roads issues.
The subcommittee has liaised with the Federal minister’s office for Caldwell, Maria Vamvakinou in August to discuss further advocacy of the roads issues and possible inclusion in the North/West federal strategy for roads.
General Business
President Kathryn
outlined that it may be time to update the GRA logo, and mentioned the possibility
of us having a website which has minutes & contact numbers rather than a blog
spot. The GRA face book page is
currently being maintained by members. The president said she will have some firm proposals at our next meeting.
There was also
discussion on council’s reluctance to move Mobile library to Rec. Centre. With
the advent to the secondary college being established on the adjacent site, a
library situated within the Rec. Centre could serve both the Greenvale
community and the secondary college students. GRA to write to council to
consider this in their next budget.
